American Association of Blacks in Higher Education National Conference
Pathways to Success within Higher Education

March 25-28, 2018
Hilton North Raleigh ● Raleigh, NC

Corporate Sponsorship Request

Nature of Request:  The American Association of Blacks in Higher Education will hold its Annual Conference on March 25-28, 2018, in New Orleans, LA. This year’s theme is Pathways to Success in Higher Education: Education, the Ultimate Civil Right!”

About AABHE: From 1980 to 2005 the American Association for Higher Education Black Caucus had the distinct privilege of expressing the interests of Black professionals in Higher Education.  With the demise of the American Association for Higher Education (AAHE), the Black Caucus remained committed to providing its constituents with a forum and resources to address a range of issues impacting African Americans in higher education.  Our foremost concern, however, has been improving the educational leadership pipeline responsible for training, sustaining and advancing Blacks in higher education. Incorporated in 2006, AABHE began to solidify its mission and vision.

Mission: The American Association of Blacks in Higher Education (AABHE) pursues the educational and professional needs of Blacks in higher education with a focus on leadership, access and vital issues impacting students, faculty, staff, and administrators.  AABHE also facilitates and provides opportunities for collaborating and networking among individuals, institutions, groups and agencies in higher education in the United States and Internationally.

Vision: The American Association of Blacks in Higher Education (AABHE) will become the premier organization to drive leadership development, access and vital issues concerning Blacks in higher education.  In pursuing this vision, AABHE seeks to collaborate with other ethnic groups and organizations that have similar interests.

Conference Information

America’s educational environment is still replete with challenges related to limited educational access and achievement. African Americans in higher education in the 21st century must operate in a transformative mode taking a proactive stance. Today’s educational institutions endeavor to be multifaceted striving to respond to domestic conditions, economic forces, complex political situations, and the increasing demands of its student constituents.  Institutional goals are to be interdisciplinary; asking faculty to be collaborative, staff to focus on civic responsibility, leadership development, and team building with their programs.  As institutions strive to enrich the student’s learning outcomes, students demand that their institutions become better corporate citizens.  The 2017 National Conference on Blacks in Higher Education will address the question, how can we provide a global learning experience, enhance student outcomes, and cultivate the next generation of Blacks to successfully matriculate into the workforce?  Sessions will focus on the topic below and will concentrate on each component individually.

“Pathways to Success within Higher Education”

The American Association of Blacks in Higher Education (AABHE) pursues numerous initiatives that address the pipeline of Black students, faculty and staff in higher education, bringing issues pertinent to Black faculty and staff to the attention of the larger academic community, and reorganizing African American achievements and accomplishments to higher education. AABHE also facilitates and provides opportunities for collaborating and networking among individuals, institutions, groups and agencies in higher education in the United States and Internationally. AABHE is seeking presenters to share their best and promising practices for increasing the number of blacks entering and succeeding in higher education and to showcase their relevant research.

Expected Audience: The expected audience includes higher education personnel and students. The conference is open to all administrators, faculty, staff and students from higher education institutions and agencies whose focus is on the enhancement of achievement for African Americans in education.  We also appreciate and encourage the participation of business and civic groups as we dialogue on conference topics and issues. The conference will be promoted through our partner publications: Diverse Issues in Higher Education and The Negro Educational Review. Our goal is to attract upwards of 250 individuals.

Expected Outcomes: It is anticipated that the conference and its activities will create synergy for attendees and others who are concerned with the challenges facing blacks entering and succeeding in higher education. The major goals of the 2017 AABHE National Conference are:

To provide a forum to discuss key issues that impact access and success for Black students and professionals.

To showcase educational initiatives that facilitates effective collaborations and networks.

To provide a forum to discuss graduate student success.

To provide a forum to discuss professional development and career advancement for faculty and administrators who seek to elevate their career.
